Endodontic Treatment (Root Canal Therapy)
Despite the stories you may have heard about root canal, in reality it is generally a relatively simple procedure that can be completed in a single visit, and most often with little or no discomfort.
Better still, it can save your tooth and save your smile. Dr. Gendler has done just that more than 1,000 times with successful root canal therapies.
To understand this straightforward procedure, you first need to know that inside each tooth lies a slender strand of “pulp” that contains nerves and provides nutrients to the tooth. This pulp reaches all the way down to the tooth’s root.
When the pulp becomes infected or irreversibly inflamed, endodontic treatment is urgently needed. Without treatment, the tooth itself may be at risk of dying; root canals can save that tooth.
In the procedure, anesthesia is first administered and then an opening is made through the biting surface of the tooth. The pulp is then removed and the pulp chamber is sealed. The tooth is then sealed with a crown made of porcelain or gold.
